I was never the biggest fan of Scooby-Doo's animated cartoon when I was young. I enjoyed it like any other kid who enjoys almost everything, but it was never a show that made me nervously excited during the day, waiting for it to come on TV. I vividly remember getting pumped, knowing that a new episode of Dragon Ball Z or Timon & Pumba would broadcast on that particular day. I never felt that way with Scooby-Doo, and honestly, I don't know why. I was always curious about sci-fi and "what lies beyond", so maybe the fact that the goal of the show was to justify every single paranormal activity with some "guy in a mask" didn't really appeal to the kid in me...
Either way, I still liked the series, and my memory is filled with all of the show's classic signatures: the (double or even triple) un-masking of the villains, Scooby jumping to Shaggy's arms because they both got scared, the ridiculously large sandwiches, you name it. Ironically, the biggest compliment I can give the film also relates to its major flaw. For any fan of the show, these classic moments will provide high levels of nostalgia and entertainment, so anyone who comes looking for that will definitely get what they desire.
However, even though Scoob! is far from feeling like a corporate flick packed with product placement (looking at you, Sonic the Hedgehog), I can't help but feel that the studio was embarrassed by its own property. They try so hard to make this movie belong to 2020 that they completely forgot about what makes the show special for so many people. From the weirdly confusing song selection to the way too modern plot points, Scoob! 's narrative distinctly follows an Avengers-style plot (including an obvious allusion to Captain America holding his shield) focusing strongly on the superhero theme.
They didn't believe that Mystery Inc. and the (successful) formulaic story were enough to hold the target audience's attention, so they decided to borrow from one of the most entertaining and financially impactful genres of today, losing the essence of their own IP. Therefore, despite Scoob! having almost all of the cartoon's classic scenes, it still feels detached from the source material. In addition to this, if you're not a fan of Scooby-Doo and if you don't know anything about it, then don't expect this film to explain anything to you.
Fred, Velma, and Daphne get separated from Shaggy and Scooby early on (due to a hilariously dumb scene that only kids will accept), so almost no character development occurs within the first group of people. This movie focuses more on the pair's adventure and their relationship dynamics (which are explored in a cliche yet efficient manner), leaving 3/5 of the Mystery Inc. feeling left off. Actually, now that I think about it, Scoob! doesn't even have a mystery to solve!
In the cartoons, every episode is about discovering what or who's causing a specific paranormal event. This film basically follows that formula for the first fifteen minutes (which serve as an origin story of the gang) and then takes an entirely different path story-wise. I'm not going to complain about the plot's absurdity because it's undeniably a kids' movie, but these forced attempts to adapt Scooby-Doo to 2020 are what ruin the whole thing for me. The voice acting is great, though, and hearing Frank Welker interpret Scooby again is incredibly joyful.
All in all, Scoob! possesses almost all of the classic moments from the original cartoon, which will surely leave fans of the series satisfied and feeling that heartwarming nostalgia. In addition to this, the voice work is really good for the most part, especially from the legend, Frank Welker as Scooby. However, the studio hurts the film with countless attempts to adapt the formulaic yet successful screenplay that the show employed for decades into 2020. From the superhero-like plot to the lack of a central mystery, Tony Cervone finds himself in a writing mess (four screenwriters and three "story by" credits) from a company ashamed of its own product. If you're a hardcore fan of the animated show, this movie might leave you satisfied. But if you don't share a special connection with these characters and their classic adventures, or if you don't know anything about this franchise at all, Scoob! not only doesn't care to introduce or develop its characters, but it definitely isn't going to convert you.
Rating: C- It was an okay Scooby-Doo movie for the kids. The animation looks great and for the most part the voice talents were good, especially Zac Efron as Fred was great, as were Gina Rodriguez and Amanda Seyfried as Velma and Daphne respectively. However, wasn't that thrilled with Will Forte's Shaggy (still think Matthew Lillard has been perfect thus far, I know they wanted a name, but doubt star power sells movies nowadays).
Anyway, it was a serviceable enough animated flick, personally I'm not a fan of the supernatural plots when it comes to the Scooby-Doo franchise, but fine for the family, so long as you're not an entrenched fan, I can see why some may hate this iteration. **3.25/5**

When an attack on the Kingsman headquarters takes place and a new villain rises, Eggsy and Merlin are forced to work together with the American agency known as the Statesman to save the world. Kingsman: The Golden Circle 2017 review : This _Kingsman_ sequel might not be an outright terrible movie, but it is a **massive** disappointment. Virtually every enjoyable aspect of the first movie has been either turned down to and unsatisfyingly low level, or blasted way the fuck up into the realm of off-putting nonsense. _The Golden Circle_ somehow manages to both underserve all of its elements, while still feeling far too long. A couple of good fights, nice suits and maybe a single laugh can be found throughout the movie, but it does not do the original one iota of justice.
_Final rating:★★½ - Had a lot that appealed to me, didn’t quite work as a whole._ This is indeed a silly, even childish at time, movie but to me it was also a really really fun movie to watch.
The movie starts by the Kingsman organisation getting screwed over royally by the psychopathic Poppy Adams which forces what remains of the organisation, all two people, to work with their counterpart in the United States. Just as the Kingsmen are parodies on the stiff upper lip British gentleman the Statesmen are parodies of the southern US gentleman (if you can actually call them that) only even more so. Maybe it is my European heritage but I personally feel the Kingsmen are fairly cool where the drawling Statesmen are more on the silly side.
Once again Eggsy is the main character although I have to say that I personally like Harry, the original Galahad, much more. He has much more charisma, elegans and smarts. Since he is portrayed on the movie posters I guess it is not much of a spoiler when I say that, to my delight, the rumors of his death were greatly exaggerated. Unfortunately Eggsy is sometimes quite cool and plays his British gentleman role quite well and sometimes he is just dumb as a doornail.
Poppy Adams is okay but she is bordering on the ludicrous too much for my taste. The we have a certain English artist, a Sir no less. I do not know how much they had to pay to get him to take part in this movie but I am fairly sure I would consider it too much. He was just silly as far as I am concerned.
The movie is of course loaded with gadgets, most of them of the variety that makes noises of varying levels of loudness usually resulting in one or more bad guys biting the dust. It is almost gadget overload but I really liked. Sometimes this amount of totally unbelievable gadgets is dragging down the movie more than anything but in this one it was mostly a success. To me Harry and the gadgetry is what makes this movie.
Given that I am originally from Sweden I have mixed feelings about Eggsy’s girlfriend and the Swedish royalties. I guess those parts were okay but I could have been without them as well. At least I feel that however wrote the scene with the “royal” dinner could have read up on Swedish etiquette. Knocking on a glass with your spoon, knife or fork means you are about to give a speech, NOT that you want the plates to be changed. A professional servant, and the Swedish royalty DO have professional servants, do not need to be told when to change plates.
The actual story is, well it is original at least but I would not rate it any higher than okay. It served as a vehicle for stringing together all the stunts and jokes so it served its purpose. The worst part of the story was that I was actually finding myself agreeing with the president. This might perhaps shock some people but I am sorry, if you are dumb enough to ingest that crap, which is also highly illegal, then I have no sympathy for you.
If you get upset about stupid plot details and plot holes then be prepared to be upset. There are plenty of them in this movie. To me it did not matter too much since this is not really a thriller or drama. It is a spy parody / comedy. Having said that it did piss me off a bit that this advanced organisation did not have brains enough to deal with the piece of equipment left in the London cab at the beginning of the movie. I mean, it was just soo obvious what would happen.
Anyway, on the whole this movie was great fun to watch. I hope we get another sequel. Perhaps one with a Japanese version of the Kingsmen? There ought to be plenty of cultural stereotypes to play on there.

COVID-19 impacted the number of movies released in 2020, but the horror genre didn't seem to really suffer from it. Quality will always be subjective, but in my opinion, this year has examples at every point of the spectrum. I've witnessed some shockingly awful horror flicks (Fantasy Island, The Grudge, The Turning, You Should Have Left), a few "wasted potential" examples (Gretel & Hansel, The Rental, The New Mutants), some pretty decent ones (Underwater, Antebellum, Come Play), and more than just a couple of incredible films, some might even end up in my Top10 of the year (The Invisible Man, The Lodge). I didn't know much about Relic, but its premise got me interested.
This is Natalie Erika James' directorial debut, as well as her first feature-length screenplay, co-written with the also first-timer Christian White. Boasting a relatively unknown cast (to me, at least), I can't hide my surprise regarding how much I enjoy this film. Ambiguous horror movies with underlying themes are far from being an audience-favorite subgenre, much on the contrary. Usually, this type of film possesses traits that a regular moviegoer doesn't really look forward to: a slow pace, a series of suspenseful sequences that don't lead to the generic jumpscare, and finally, an ending that apparently might miss some sort of explanation, leaving the audience feeling underwhelmed.
Well, guess what? I love this subgenre, especially when it really hits me in the heart. It has all the ingredients above that I know will make most people think "this didn't make any sense, it's so boring". Many viewers will expect just another spooky, supernatural, psychological horror flick, and disappointment will meet them at the end. However, its narrative carries so much more than what's on the surface, and honestly, this is made clear pretty early in the movie. At its core, Relic is quite a realistic depiction of what happens to the older members of some families (unfortunately, more than what it should be), and it approaches extremely sensitive themes such as dementia and the abandonment of old people in nursing homes.
Natalie and Christian's screenplay doesn't hide from delivering a few messages concerning these two topics. Dementia is a terrible disease that, amongst other things, makes people lose what makes them unique, what makes them human, and forget who they truly are. If our parents take care of us throughout our young life, it's only fitting that we take care of them when/if they begin to fail to do so themselves. Not only should we do this because they already did the same for us when we were young, but also due to the possibility that our descendants might have to do the same when we grow old. It's a variation of the known circle of life.
Love should always be present, no matter the circumstances. A little piece of my personal life: my grandfather wasn't quite there at the end. He gradually became unable to drive, walk, and eventually speak. I chose to not see him as much as I did in his last few weeks, simply because I didn't want to remember him as someone he wasn't. My memory of him is intact with the best moments I've spent with him, and not that depressing phase at a nursing home, just laying in bed, waiting for his time to leave our world... It's a small portion of my life that I share with you, so you understand how Relic can impact so many viewers if people give it a legitimate chance with adequate expectations.
The acting is phenomenal across the board. Robyn Nevin can be scary as the grandmother Edna, but in the end, she's the emotional trigger that made me tear up. There are little nuances in her expressions that elevate her overall performance. Emily Mortimer is also outstanding as the mom, Kay, who has to go through all stages in dealing with a parent with dementia. From rejection and separation to acceptance and unconditional love, Kay is the character that gets a more significant focus. Bella Heathcote might have less screentime than the other two, but she's also fantastic as Sam, particularly in the horror sequences. Nevertheless, it's precisely this last point that hurts the film.
The house's atmosphere is incredibly suspenseful, but the third act brings out an unexpected level of horror, which I believe to be exaggerated. The balance between horror and family drama was excellent throughout the first two acts, except for short periods here and there, but the last twenty minutes go through such an over-the-top, eerie, extremely fictional path that ultimately ruins that near-perfect balance. It's almost like the producers came in and said "we need more horror", so they filmed a bunch of crazy, mind-bending, physics-defying scenes. This movie didn't need any of that, and it should have stuck with the intriguing drama instead of forcing the disturbing horror.
Technically, Charlie Sarroff's camera work is impeccable. With the help of Denise Haratzi and Sean Lahiff's editing, long takes strongly improve the build-up to the scary sequences, generating exceptional levels of tension and suspense. Brian Reitzell's score is interesting, but there's a point in the film where it gets a bit awkward, having in mind the scene taking place, but it doesn't hurt his overall work. Great pacing control, adequate runtime, and a beautiful, heartfelt, relevant ending that, unfortunately, some viewers won't be able to see past its apparently underwhelming climax.
All in all, Relic is one of those typical horror movies that will divide critics and audiences all around the world. This time, only false expectations can lead to disappointment. With the help of the also debutant Christian White, both deliver an exceptionally well-written, genuinely sad yet realistic story about dementia and how old people are treated once they can't live by themselves anymore. A remarkably ambiguous narrative filled with underlying themes leads to an emotionally powerful ending if the viewer is able to understand the implicit messages spread across the runtime. Emily Mortimer, Robyn Nevin, and Bella Heathcote all deliver exceptional performances. Technically, the lingering cinematography plus seamless editing create an extraordinarily suspenseful environment. However, the third act dives into horror way too much, holding unnecessary sequences that only ruin the film's tone, raising questions that don't belong in the movie. Still, I sincerely recommend it to anyone who enjoys this type of film, but please manage your expectations as fair as possible.
